Exploring York – Shop Until You Drop!

York Minster

York is a shopper's paradise, with a wide range of independent boutiques, high street stores, and markets to choose from. In a recent survey we conducted on our social media channels 47% of shoppers said the best place to shop was Monks Cross and Vangarde, however this was closely followed by 33% of shoppers stating that city centre shopping on Fossgate and Stonegate was their number one location.

Here are our favourite places to shop in York in no particular order:

1. Shambles - This historic street is one of the most famous shopping destinations in York. Arguably this is because of its resemblance to Diagon Alley in Harry Potter, which explains the presence of The Potions Cauldron on this street. Along the same lines, Shambles offers a wonderful abundance of independent shops and boutiques.

2. Fossgate - This vibrant street is home to a range of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants. It's a great place to find unique gifts, books, clothing, and delicious food and drink.

3. Stonegate - This picturesque street is a perfect concoction of independent boutiques and pubs to stop in for a tipple. For inspiration, you may wish to drop by Ye Olde Starr Inne. For shopping, consider the Antiques Centre, Whistles, The Stonegate Teddy Bear, or the Kathe Wohlfahrt Christmas Shop for some year round festive cheer.

4. Newgate Market - This bustling market is located in the city centre. The market is open all year round, from Monday to Saturday. It offers a wide range of goods, including fresh produce, local products, clothing, flowers, crafts, and more.

5. York Designer Outlet - (McArthurGlen - Designer Outlet) For something more modern you can hop on a bus to this shopping centre, located on the outskirts of York at Naburn. Take your pick from shops like Rituals, The North Face, Fred Perry, Reiss, and more. All at a discounted price!

6. Monks Cross and Vangarde - Similar to the Designer Outlet, you truly will be spoilt for choice here. Vangarde Shopping Park offers a Nando’s, Prezzo, and Cafe Nero. Meanwhile Monks Cross has well-known high-street brands such as Primark, TKMaxx, Sports Direct, Decathlon, The Fragrance Shop and Hobbycraft!

There are plenty of fantastic places to shop in York, whether you're looking for high street brands, independent boutiques, or artisan goods. So, why not explore the city's vibrant shopping scene and discover your own favourite spots?
