There’s something lovely about autumn – crisp mornings, cosy evenings, and golden leaves everywhere. But while you’re enjoying that pumpkin spice latte, it’s also the perfect time to give your home a little TLC. A few simple checks now can save you stress (and money!) later in the year.
Here are our top autumn home maintenance tips to keep your home happy and healthy:
Give Your Boiler a Check-Up
Don’t wait for the first frosty morning to find out your boiler isn’t working! Test it now while the weather’s still mild. If something seems off, you’ll have plenty of time to call in an engineer. Remember, an annual service by a Gas Safe engineer is the way to go – and keep hold of that record, as it’ll come in handy if you decide to sell your home.
Test Your Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Safety first! Autumn is a great reminder to test your alarms and pop in fresh batteries. It’s much better than being woken up at 2am by that dreaded “low battery” beep. If your alarms are out of date, you can grab replacements easily from most supermarkets or DIY stores.
Freshen Up Your Radiators
Before you switch the heating on, give your radiators a quick wipe-down. Dust can create strange smells once they heat up. A dusting wand works wonders for reaching behind too – your nose (and your guests!) will thank you.
Keep Condensation & Damp at Bay
As we close windows to keep the chill out, condensation can creep in. Left unchecked, it can turn into damp or mould. The trick? Keep your home well-ventilated, use extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms, open windows when possible and wipe away condensation as soon as you spot it. Small actions make a big difference!
Clear Out Those Gutters
Falling leaves are beautiful – but not when they’re clogging your gutters! Blocked gutters can cause rainwater to spill over and even seep into your brickwork. Take a little time to clear them out, or if heights aren’t your thing, hire a professional to do it for you. Your gutters (and your walls) will thank you later.
A little autumn maintenance now = a cosier, safer, and stress-free winter.
